Dr Gavin Fincher – Senior Medical Officer

Dear Healthy Queensland Awards,

My name is Dr Gavin Fincher. I am an Emergency Consultant working at The Prince Charles Hospital, in the Emergency Department. I am very passionate about the need for us all to be Healthy and I strongly believe that this should start as early as possible. I deal with the very unfortunate consequences of people not be·ing healthy every day at work.

Prince Charles Hospital where I work is a Hospital that has very strong suites in Cardiovascular and Respiratory medicine. The Prince Charles Emergency Department is a general emergency department, taking people of all ages. I am proud that I work at such an excellent Hospital.

In the near future Prince Charles Hospital and specifically Prince Charles Emergency Department is to get a major new Paediatric Emergency Department. This will be backed up with a Paediatric inpatient unit.

I love to see positive efforts in the direction of greater health. Given the new Paediatric unit, which is to be built, I would love to see the Junior Tennis Association (JTA) receive support to encouragement to allow greater numbers of children to be fit and of course play tennis.

Why tennis and why the Junior Tennis Association.

I have 2 children who play tennis, Glenn who is 9 and Anna who is 6. Both started playing Tennis when they were 3. Glenn is now in his 7th year of playing Tennis. They both love Tennis. I enjoy watching them play. I enjoy their enjoyment. They are both fit and healthy children who are able to turn their skills to multiple sports. I put a lot of this down to the JTA.

Through the JTA, they have been coached by Teddy Bednarek. The coaching has been at the JTA at Bracken Ridge in Brisbane. They combine the Coaching with fixtures. Both children enjoy their interaction with Teddy, they listen to him, and follow him.
I feel Mr Bednarek is an excellent coach, and a great individual, who has a very good connection with the children.

Following discussions between a group of the Parents, Mr. Bednarek and myself, we feel as a group that we have room to expand the Program. We have a good strong program, that is developing a terrific bunch of young tennis players.

We feel that there is plenty of room to expand the program, to allow multiple new children play tennis and become Healthy. The priority is of course always the children and their enjoyment in playing tennis.

We feel that there is, space and time available. The aim will be to introduce Tennis in local schools. There are already connections in place; the aim is to increase these connections.

We can then provide the time and space for the new children, interested in Tennis, at Bracken Ridge.

Thank you for considering this application.
This would be a great program to support.
